This is how my personal journey on Accutane looked like. It may differ from person to person, but according to my dermatologist, this is time frame seems to be the norm.
Months 1–3: ‘The Purge’
It’s common to experience a temporary increase in breakouts as the treatment speeds up skin cell turnover. This forces oil, debris, and acne-causing bacteria to the surface, which may lead to more inflammation and breakouts during the first few weeks. This could be the worst looking phase of your journey, but I promise, it will only get better……so hang in tight!
Months 3–9: Noticeable Improvement
Welcome Change!
At this stage, a visible reduction in active acne is usually seen. Fewer new blemishes appear, and the existing ones start to diminish.
The bumps flatten
The inflammation and redness that were prominent during the purge typically lessen, giving the skin a calmer appearance.
Clear skin peek a boo
Dark marks and discoloration from past breakouts begin to fade, and the overall skin texture and tone improve.
Skin is parched
Although dry skin may still be an issue, many people find it more tolerable and manageable with proper hydration and skincare.
Months 9–15: Finale
Clear skin persists
Majority of users see dramatic results with minimal to no active acne
Hyperpigmentation fades
Any lingering red or brown spots from old acne continue to fade
After Treatment: Long-Term Skin Health
The most important phase is the aftercare use a gentle, hydrating routine that protects the skin barrier and support healing.
Continue applying a topical retinoid (like tretinoin or adapalene) to keep pores clear and extend the benefits of treatment.
Make sunscreen your new best friend
And above all, continue to love yourself……
